Barbie Dolls the rage of the late 50’s continues to this very day with young and big girls all over the world. It is a phenomenon that has never ended ever since the Barbie Doll was first exhibited at the New York’s Toy Fair in 1959, thereby making it the first adult doll to ever be introduced in the American market. Before the Barbie phenomenon hit the US markets, dolls were patterned and manufactured as infants and babies for little girls. Older girls never really had a doll that they could relate with.

The first adult Barbie Doll was of 1959 was a shapely teen age fashion model that came with a price tag of $3/-. The Barbie Doll story began some years before when a couple by the name of Elliot and Ruth Handler commercially and successfully teamed up with Harold Matson to manufacture doll furniture from frame wood scraps under the brand name of Mattel. Around this time Ruth noted that her daughter and her friends preferred to play with adult paper dolls rather than child or baby dolls and whom they considered would be their role model when they became adults. Reflecting on this novel phenomenon Ruth hit upon the idea of developing a whole new concept of adult female dolls for the US markets. Ruth’s husband was initially skeptical about the manufacturing cost feasibility and the market demand but after Ruth returned from Germany with a doll called Lilli that was patterned after a German comic strip, she began working on a redesigned adult doll prototype along with a dress designer. The adult doll was born and Ruth named the doll the Barbie Doll after her daughter. Consequently, the Barbie Dolls were mass produced by Mattel in 1958 and hit the US stores in 1959 with a bang as loud as the break of a sound barrier by an airplane. Young women in the States went wild with Barbie Dolls. Today Barbie Dolls that were produced between the 1959 and 1972 are vintage collectibles by all Barbie Doll fans and sell for as much as $10,000, though some get them for as little $2000.
