Ed Hardy, whose real name is Don Ed Hardy, is a very well known tattoo artist, though today he is retired from doing tattoo work. He regularly oversees artists in his shops located in his San Francisco studio. Hardy has pioneered pop-culture art with his designs and continues to do so through various clothing brands. He has also been appointed to the San Francisco Cultural Arts Commission and received an honorary doctorate degree from the San Francisco Art Institute.

Clothing lines produced by Ed Hardy are manufactured by Ku USA, Inc. In 2004, Christian Audigier purchased the licenses to Ed Hardy works and also marketed the clothing line of Von Dutch. Currently, there are twelve stores in high profile fashion districts that sell Ed Hardy clothing. These locations include Waikiki, Dubai, Kuwait, Dallas, LA, Miami, Tuscon, New York, Houston, Tokyo, Singapore, Noosa, Melbourne, Sydney and Riga. There are also future plans to market the material in cities such as New Delhi and Mumbai as well as Hamburg and a second store in San Francisco.

However, there are several nightclubs in Vancouver that do not allow Ed Hardy clothing because it can sometimes be associated with gang members and gang rivalries. Ed Hardy and his wife, in 1982, created Hardy Marks Publications in which they wrote, edited and published over twenty five books on alternative art.
Ed Hardy has also curated numerous exhibitions for galleries, museums, non-profit organizations and universities as well as making appearances in periodicals, books and international films.
