The true nature of fashion is one of evolving designs that reflect the thinking pattern of a generation of people belonging to a certain era in history. In modern times, however, clothing fashion not only reflects the dress mindset of a people but has also categorized into clothing types in order to suit a particular occasion of activity. For instance there are clothes for casual activities, sports activities, travel activities, picnic activities, sailing activities, evening wear, dance parties among a host of other human activities. Naturally, these fashion clothing activities belong to the upper crust of societies and depending on the type of fabric and design the costs can be rather prohibitive.
The Madam Alexander Cissy dolls are a special category of adult dolls that is designed and built to portray the upper class of society that sport such apparel as fur coats, sophisticated evening wear, expensive leather stilettos, exquisite lingerie, unique casual wear, high profile sportswear and a whole range of designer attire that belong to the celebrity club of who’s who. Actually in keeping with the philosophy of the original 1950’s 21 inch Madame Alexander Cissy doll, the doll continues to be deliberately designed in order to accurately reflect the full range of high socialite fashion and fashion accessories and the outcome of the Cissy dolls was that the range of outfits worn in imitation of the celebrities were outfits that had not yet hit the commercial stores of the upper class society (as distinct from the celebrity class). The Cissy dolls became so popular that they were used to advertize high fashion is all popular women’s magazine, so much so that the British government requested Madame Alexander to make a doll to represent Queen Elizabeth-II and which was successfully made; the Queen Elizabeth Cissy doll was 20 inches in height and was dressed in a court gown of white brocade with a blue garter sash and star and white gloves. The doll’s jewelry comprised of a tiara, earrings and bracelets in rhinestone and rubies. The doll is in excellent condition and retails for $ 1200/-.
Madame Alexander designed a complete wardrobe for Cissy which included lingerie, street and evening clothes and many accessories. Each year, special dolls were issued wearing complete ensembles. Cissy was manufactured until 1959. From 1959 to 1961, her face was used for portrait dolls. The Madame Alexander Doll Company has re-issued Cissy. However, both the face and body molds have been changed. She is still being made today and still sought after by collectors.
