In the early nineteenth century when the concept of cars was still a dream, the introduction of hot rods led to a sudden increase in the conceptualization of a fashion statement in the emerging automobile industry. Rat rods are known for their distinct designs, varied art forms and elegant shapes.

The Earlier Hot Rods

In the early days when the rat rods had just hit the scene, it was noticed that the market for automobiles was mainly based on the concept of ferrying people from one location to another. So, there was no style statement and the vehicles were mostly dull and ordinary. With the rise in income, there arouse a need for a fashionable automobile. This led to the introduction of the hot rods, which as the name well suggests, were considered hot and were used mainly to present a style statement. The hot rods of the mid fifties were mere showpieces which could well be compared to uncomfortable fuel guzzling machines that had nothing to offer in terms of comfort and economy.

The Present Day Rat Rods

With time, the concept of Hot Rods gave way to rat rods and the basic design, shape and usability changed in accordance with the latest trends. Now, with the rising fuel cost and other expenses, the maintenance of a Rat Rod started being considered a pain for most automobile enthusiasts. Hence, to avoid inconvenience, the new rat rods had fresh designs, an improved engine and improved interiors to provide a greater comfort.

Now, people who built rat rods started choosing those hot rods which could be salvaged at an affordable charge. They also brought spares from known sources and insured to have them incorporated at the least possible expense. So, the present day rat rods are not merely show pieces but can also be driven to the market and used like other ordinary cars.
